Do you love supporting adults in meeting their educational and life goals?  Do you have teaching experience you’d like to put to good use?  Do you believe in serving your community?  If so, Vermont Adult Learning would love to hear from you!  We are looking for volunteers to teach beginning level English Language Learners.  


Who are we looking for?

This is a great opportunity for a current or former educator who wants to connect with learners from a diverse range of cultures and give back to the community. We are looking for someone who can deliver engaging and effective lessons and foster a welcoming, supportive learning environment. 


Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Provides high-quality, In-person, instruction to VAL English language learners. 

  • Facilitates English language learning lessons that integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing. 

  • Able to work with an existing curriculum. Experience developing instructional materials is a plus.

  • Completes required paperwork and data entry in a timely and accurate manner.  

  • Maintains professional standards of confidentiality.


Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills: 

  • Certification in ELL/ESOL/TESL strongly preferred.

  • 1-3 years of relevant teaching experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience in curriculum and materials development is preferred. 

  • Effectively manages a class with varied educational skills, and is adept at addressing individualized language and cultural needs. 

  • Must possess strong interpersonal, oral, and written English communication skills. 

  • Requires the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. 

  • Can make a 6 month commitment to volunteering.

  • Commitment to racial equity, as well as other forms of educational equities around class, ability, language, gender and sexuality. Candidates should be excited to work with diverse students, especially students of color, English Language Learners, and LGBTQIA+ students.
