What is Ride Together?

Ride Together is a free travel training program dedicated to providing community members with short-term, focused instruction on how to ride the city bus, specifically GMT's fixed route public transit system. Learning how to use the city bus can be daunting for many types of people and for many different reasons, so our program is designed to be flexible and personalized to address the needs of every individual. Public transit is a cheap and manageable way to maintain independence and mobility -- we're happy to help you get there!

What is a Travel Advisor?

Travel Advisors are volunteers that facilitate travel training in two ways:

  • Classroom instruction, where a Travel Advisor will provide a comprehensive overview of navigating GMT fixed route transportation, including topics such as reading bus schedules, planning and making a bus trip, utilizing the Transit app, maneuvering mobility devices, paying the fare, using bike racks, and practicing bus etiquette and safety. Can be one-to-one or in a group; can be remote or in-person.
  • Field instruction, where classroom knowledge is put into practice on a real GMT bus, accompanied by a Travel Advisor. Can be one-to-one or in a group; must be in-person.

Volunteer schedules are flexible and will be arranged depending on the availability of the volunteer. Free training is provided by GMT. Committed volunteers will receive free bus passes to encourage continued community assistance, usable on any GMT bus when fares resume on March 6, 2024.

Inclement Weather Plan: Part of Ride Together's curriculum involves field instruction, where Travel Advisors accompany trainees on a real bus trip. This includes some time outdoors, including getting to the bus stop, waiting at the bus stop, riding the bus, and arriving at a destination. However, because many people rely on public transportation even during inclement weather, field instruction will take place rain or shine.
