Who We Are

Local Motion is a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to make it safe, accessible, and fun for everyone to bike, walk, and roll in Vermont. Our vision is that more people will walk, bike, and roll in Vermont for recreation and transportation, improving their health while benefiting local communities and the environment.

The most important work we can do is continue to identify and reduce barriers, create opportunities, and provide resources so that every Vermonter and visitor has equitable and safe access to biking, walking, and rolling, while also being sensitive to the needs and desires of local communities.

What We Do

Our mission. Local motion works to make it safe, accessible, and fun for everyone to bike, walk, and roll in Vermont. Check out our 2022 - 2026 Strategic Plan.

Vision and impact. Our vision is that more people will walk, bike, and roll in Vermont for recreation and transportation, improving their health while benefiting local communities and the environment.

Vermonters are increasingly turning to biking and walking as safe and healthy ways to get around town, commute to and from work, and for recreation. People-oriented streets create a better quality of life in communities and are helping to support economic vitality. We face an intensifying climate crisis and an aging population that requires access to modes other than driving.

How we achieve our mission. Our programming is roughly broken into three categories: education, advocacy, and services. Our education programs include Bike Smart and Safe Routes for All. Our Complete Streets Team is focused on improving on-street infrastructure and policy at both the state and local level with the goal of making Vermont streets safe and comfortable for all users. Our services include the Trailside Center bike rental shop located at the Burlington waterfront, the world-class Bike Ferry at the Colchester Causeway, free Valet Bike Parking at events around the state, and an innovative eBike Library based in Burlington plus satellite and traveling libraries around the state. We also host an interactive map of the Island Line Trail.

Our community. The Local Motion community is made up of 13 Board members, 60 past Board members, 12+ year-round staff, over 30 seasonal staff, and more than 100 volunteers. We collaborate with nonprofits and community partners that host and amplify our work, government agencies, local residents, community bike/walk groups, and anyone who works with us to achieve your mission.
