Who We Are

Mission: To preserve and share the history and heritage of Lake Champlain and its surrounding region.

The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum is a nonprofit institution dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of Lake Champlain and its surrounding region. Located in Vergennes, Vermont, the museum serves as a hub for exploring the rich maritime heritage of the area, focusing on the historical significance of the lake in trade, transportation, and military history. Through its extensive collection of artifacts, exhibits, and interactive programs, the museum provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the lake’s ecological, cultural, and historical importance. The museum is also involved in archaeological research and conservation efforts to protect the lake’s maritime history for future generations.

What We Do

The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum offers a variety of services, including guided tours, educational programs, and exhibits focused on the lake’s history, ecology, and cultural significance. The museum hosts interactive displays that feature artifacts from shipwrecks, historical vessels, and archaeological digs, offering visitors hands-on learning experiences. It also runs summer camps and workshops for children and youth, teaching them about environmental science, history, and maritime archaeology. Additionally, the museum conducts archaeological fieldwork, preserving and documenting historical sites around the lake. The museum also offers boat tours and special events, such as lectures and seasonal festivals, to engage the community and visitors in the ongoing exploration of Lake Champlain’s rich past.
