Volunteer: Become a CoSA VolunteerMembers of a Circle of Support and Accountability (CoSA) work as a team of three or more volunteers with one Core Member - someone returning to Franklin and Grand Isle Community from incarceration. CoSA Volunteers meet regularly with the Core Member to provide support and mentoring, while ensuring that the Core Member is accountable for their actions. Core Members who are accepted into the program will have expressed a desire to change and must be committed to following the guidelines of the program. CoSA Volunteers will also work with other community stakeholders to establish expectations for the Core Member with regard to behaviors, responsibilities and community public safety. The Volunteer commitment to the program and Core Member is for one year. The CoSA team meets for one hour per week and volunteers are encouraged to spend one-on-one time with the Core Member once a relationship has been established. Training for volunteers consists of a one-time CoSA training (in-person or remote) that is required prior to interacting with a Core Member. A Vermont Department of Corrections volunteer orientation and site-specific training are required every 2 years. Additional training is encouraged as needed. In some cases, we may be able to form a CoSA team before the Core Member is released from incarceration, allowing us to begin meetings inside of the facility prior to release. CoSA Volunteers play a crucial role in the Reentry Program by helping to guide Core Members on a path to becoming a contributing member of the community. By offering your time, compassion and energy, you will join a growing network of people who are committed to the safety of the community, and the successful reentry of Core Members.

Volunteer: Become a Guardian ad Litem!Right now, thousands of Vermont's children and youth are part of proceedings in the family division. Many of them are victims of abuse or neglect, accused of delinquent acts, or simply lost. They may be in foster care while they wait for safe, permanent homes. They may need someone to help them understand what's happening, to advocate for their best interests, and to make sure that their voices are heard. To children, the entire court experience may be confusing and scary. As part of the process, they may have their most private secrets revealed to strangers. When the case is over, these strangers disappear and leave the children to live with the decisions made about their lives. The Vermont Guardian ad Litem Program (VTGAL) ensures that every court has trained volunteers to serve as caring and independent child advocates, because No child should feel unheard. No child should feel lost. No child should feel helpless. No child should feel alone.Guardians ad litem (GALs) advocate for children involved in court cases. These volunteers come from all walks of life. Many are retirees. Some have been teachers, stay-at-home parents, nurses, lawyers, or social workers. Judges appoint a GAL in all child abuse and child neglect cases and occasionally in divorce or custody cases or cases when a child must testify. The GAL makes recommendations to the court and advocates for the child’s best interests in and out of court until the case is over. A GAL typically: Meets with the child at least once a month Gathers information from parents, foster parents, and other people close to the child Communicates regularly with Vermont's Department for Children and Families (DCF) and the child’s lawyer Promotes cooperation between the parties Ensures that the court has all relevant information about the childProvided Training and Support: Volunteers receive a three-day training before they begin. Because Vermont law requires a guardian ad litem (GAL) for every child in a child abuse or child neglect case, training focuses on those cases. After the initial training, new GALs shadow experienced GALs to gain real-world experience before being appointed to their own cases. Once they have begun volunteering, GALs receive further instruction on specialized topics, such as working with youth in delinquency cases. GALs also participate in training offered by the DCF and other agencies. GALs have less formal opportunities for education as well, such as monthly brown-bag lunches and webinars. GALs receive support from a variety of sources. A paid staff coordinator provides direct assistance to the GALs in most counties. Central office staff offers help in more complicated cases or when there is no coordinator available. GALs also get support from other GALs in their county. Finally, GALs work closely with the DCF and the child's lawyer throughout a case.
Our Next Pre-Service Training is in May 2024. There is plenty of time to apply, complete the interview and screening process so you can participate in the next training. If you'd like to join the great team of Guardians ad Litem across the region, please apply or reach out to speak with a Regional Coordinator with your questions.
Want to make a difference? Click here to fill out an application! Nonprofit: Vermont Guardian Ad Litem Program (GAL) Right now, thousands of Vermont's children and youth are part of proceedings in the family division. Volunteer: Age Well seeking volunteers to provide respite to caregiversOften, as Vermonters age, family and friends are taking care of their loved ones so they can remain at home. Many of these caregivers become increasingly unable to care for themselves as they take on this loving responsibility at the expense of careers, families, and their own well-being. The cost and availability of a professional caregiver to provide them with respite is often unattainable. Age Well’s Respite Squad Volunteer Program provides the support that so many of our caregiving families desperately need. Age Well is seeking to recruit respite volunteers who are willing to provide a break for caregivers. Respite volunteers are expected to commit to volunteering once a week for 3 hours. As a volunteer, you will build trust and bonds with a family to provide them with crucial assistance. You will also reap the benefit of having a rewarding and enjoyable volunteer experience, knowing that you are making a meaningful difference in your community. Volunteer: Teach Computer and/or Financial LiteracyComputer Literacy: Dismas House residents should be afforded opportunities to develop computer literacy skills, both for personal and professional reasons. Volunteers can offer assistance to residents' one-on-one, bolstering individual confidence and fostering relationships with community members. Volunteers must demonstrate a familiarity with computers and will be asked about their experience prior to working with residents. Ideal candidates are patient, enjoy teaching, and like working one-on-one (18+). Financial Literacy: Dismas House provides a therapeutic community home to people leaving incarceration. Many of our residents do not have banking, money management or budgeting experience and would benefit from assistance learning the basic skills of a personal budget as well as assistance with forms and requirements for savings and banking. These skills will assist residents with the next steps in their transition from Dismas to the broader community. To secure their success, volunteers can guide residents through the personal budgeting and money management process by sharing a familiarity with personal budgets and the requirements to open and use checking or other bank accounts. Volunteers must demonstrate a familiarity with basic financial skills: how to open a banking account, how to read a statement, how to manage personal income and expenses in a straightforward way. Volunteers will be asked about their experience prior to working with residents. Ideal candidates are patient, enjoy teaching, and like working one-on-one (18+).

Volunteer: Event Planners & Leaders in TrainingVKAP is recruiting volunteers to serve on two important work groups: Conference and Sustainability. The Conference Committee plans, organizes and carries out the VKAP Annual Conference. The Sustainability Committee plans events to help ensure VKAP has the resources it needs to continue its programs to support kinship caregivers. We need people with time, ideas and energy who are thoughtful, good at planning and organizing events, and will make time for monthly meetings. (For those living at a distance from Williston, participation in meetings by conference call will be an option.) Life experience as a foster parent, kin caregiver, or having been raised in a foster or kin care family is helpful, but not required. Serving on these two groups is a great way to meet people, develop your skills and be part of a dedicated and motivated team. This commitment is ongoing & could lead to opportunities to get involved in a leadership role at VKAP.
